Guinea: Countdown to civil war?

24thOct. × ’09

Not in the business of predictions, but this piece is disconcerting–twelve assassinations since late September. A police source quoted in the article referred to is as “settling scores.” The more these scores grow, the more they will require to settle.

Then there’s this passage:

Separately, Guinean opposition leaders on Friday rejected an offer of mediation by Libya put forward by Tripoli’s ambassador in the capital Conakry. Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has been one of the few voices abroad expressing support for Camara.

Gaddafi has notoriously poor taste in political leadership. The calculus may be very simple, though. Gaddafi’s feelings toward an African junta government may be difficult to pin down. But, how he views Western pressure on sovereign African states may not.

If and when the parties in Guinea start to kit up, Gaddafi is one person in the neighborhood who is in a position to lend a materiel hand.
